Will the NEET syllabus change in 2026? The direct answer

No. The NEET 2026 syllabus has not changed from 2025. The National Medical Commission (NMC) released the official NEET 2026 syllabus on 22 December 2025 — and it is identical to the rationalised syllabus that has been in use since 2024. No new topics have been added. No previously deleted topics have been brought back. The same holds true for the re-exam on June 21, 2026.

Many rumours circulated on social media and Telegram groups claiming syllabus changes. All of these are false. The only reliable source is the official NMC website (nmc.org.in) and NTA’s portal (neet.nta.nic.in). This guide gives you the full picture — what the current syllabus contains, what was deleted in earlier revisions, and exactly how to prepare.

The big picture — what changed in 2023 and why it still matters in 2026

In 2023, the NMC rationalised the NEET syllabus to align it with the updated NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks. Several topics were removed to eliminate repetition and reduce unnecessary burden on students. Those deletions are permanent and continue to apply in 2026.

Students who are comparing old coaching notes or pre-2023 study material with the current syllabus will notice these differences. The 2023 rationalisation was a one-time structural change. From 2024 onward — including 2025 and 2026 — the syllabus has remained stable. There is no new deletion or addition for 2026.

What about the NEET 2026 re-exam? Does the syllabus change for it?

The NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3 was cancelled by NTA on May 12, 2026, following a confirmed paper leak. Reports from Rajasthan SOG indicated approximately 120 questions from the actual paper may have been circulated in advance. The Government of India referred the matter to the CBI. The re-exam has been scheduled for June 21, 2026.

QuestionAnswer
Will the re-exam syllabus change? No — same syllabus as May 3 exam
Will there be a new admit card?Yes — re-issued by NTA
Is fresh registration needed?No
Will fees be refunded?Yes — fees from May exam will be refunded
Will exam centres change?Possibly — check official admit card
Will question pattern change? No — 180 MCQs, same marking scheme
For students who scored well on May 3: the re-exam is a fresh start — same paper difficulty, same syllabus, same opportunity. For students who were not satisfied with May 3: this is a genuine second chance. Use the 40–50 day window for thorough revision.

Preparation strategy for NEET 2026 re-exam (June 21)

  • 1
Revise NCERT line by line — do not skip
Over 95% of Biology questions and a majority of Chemistry questions come directly from NCERT text, examples, diagrams, and footnotes. Read each line carefully, including seemingly minor details like specific names, values, and exceptions.
  • 2
    Do not study deleted topics
Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life, Communication Systems, Reproduction in Organisms (asexual), Strategies for Food Production, and Environmental Issues are out. Use that time for high-weightage chapters instead.
  • 3
Take one full mock test per week
Simulate real exam conditions — 180 questions in 180 minutes. Analyse each test: identify weak chapters, slow question types, and where negative marking is costing marks. Fix these specifically before the next test.
  • 4
    Biology is your highest-return subject
360 marks — half the paper. A student who scores 300+ in Biology and 200+ combined in Chemistry and Physics is on track for 500+. Prioritise Biology diagrams, definitions, and exception-based questions from NCERT.
  • 5
Solve at least 10 years of previous NEET papers
NEET repeats concept patterns, not exact questions. Previous year papers (2015–2025) tell you exactly which sub-topics within each chapter are frequently tested. Do not ignore questions that seem easy — they are where most marks are actually lost.
  • 6
Follow only official sources for updates
Do not act on Telegram leaks, WhatsApp forwards, or YouTube rumours about syllabus changes or exam dates. Only trust neet.nta.nic.in, nmc.org.in, and official NTA press releases.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Someone told me Genetics is being removed from NEET 2026. Is this true?
No, this is false. Genetics (Principles of Inheritance & Variation) and Molecular Basis of Inheritance are both very much part of the NEET 2026 syllabus and are among the highest-weightage chapters in Biology. They have not been removed and are not being removed. Do not trust such rumours.
Q2. The NCERT books were revised in 2023. Does NEET 2026 follow the old or new NCERT?
NMC has clarified that the NEET 2026 syllabus strictly follows the rationalised NCERT curriculum introduced in 2023. Students should use the latest editions of NCERT Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology books — not older editions from 2020 or before.
Q3. Is Class 11 or Class 12 syllabus more important for NEET 2026?
Both are equally important. NEET papers historically have roughly 50% questions from Class 11 and 50% from Class 12. In Biology specifically, Class 11 chapters like Cell Biology, Plant Morphology, and Animal Kingdom are frequently tested. Never neglect Class 11 even if you are focused on Class 12 board exams.
Q4. Can I score 600+ in NEET by only reading NCERT?
Yes — for Biology and Inorganic Chemistry, NCERT alone is sufficient for scoring very high. For Physics and Physical Chemistry, you need additional practice from standard books (H.C. Verma for Physics numericals) because NCERT theory alone does not develop problem-solving speed. For Organic Chemistry, NCERT reaction mechanisms plus practice from solved examples is typically enough.
Q5. What is the best use of the 40–50 days before the June 21 re-exam?
Week 1–2: full subject-wise NCERT revision with notes. Week 3–4: high-weightage chapter deep-dive plus previous year papers (2019–2025). Week 5–6: daily full mock tests with error analysis and formula/diagram revision. Final 3 days: light revision only, no new topics, adequate rest. Attempting new coaching material in the last week does more harm than good.

All information is based on official NMC notification dated 22 December 2025 and NTA official communications. Always verify the latest updates on neet.nta.nic.in and nmc.org.in.
